The Winston-Salem Foundation was established in 1919 with a donation of $1,000 from Colonel Francis Fries. Now more than one hundred years later, thousands of individuals and organizations have partnered with The Winston-Salem Foundation to expand its reach.
As the first established foundation of any type in North Carolina and the 16th oldest community foundation in the United States, The Winston-Salem Foundation has spent the past century cultivating relationships to benefit the greater community.
At the beginning of 2019, the Foundation managed $565 million in assets and had 1,550 charitable funds positively improving the quality of life in Winston-Salem, its surrounding areas, and beyond.
The Centennial year brought with it a new mission for the Foundation: “to inspire giving and link resources to action, strengthening Forsyth County—now and forever,” as well as new values of inclusion, accountability, and continuous learning.
M Creative developed the refreshed visual identity, print materials, and website that showcase the impact the Foundation has in the greater community.
New organizational mission
The simplicity of the new logotype and “100” centennial mark reinforce the Foundation’s clearly-stated mission and values. The clean typography and bright color palette connote a fresh, proactive approach to community challenges—one that honors the past while leading boldly into the future.
Our more than 20-year relationship with The Winston-Salem Foundation has also translated into naming, positioning, and identity assignments for key community initiatives including the Black Philanthropy Initiative, Youth Grantmakers in Action, and The Women’s Fund of Winston-Salem— initiatives that encourage the active engagement of diverse community audiences in social capital building, charitable giving, and grantmaking.
Having worked with the Foundation since 2004, we’ve seen trends come and go, and we’re proud to have helped them evolve as one of the longest-standing philanthropic organizations in our community and in our state.
