The Winston-Salem Foundation—Annual Report
Background
The Winston-Salem Foundation was established in 1919 as the first foundation in the state of North Carolina. The Foundation is comprised of over 1,000 funds established by charitable individuals, families, businesses, and community organizations. The Foundation's mission is to make philanthropy and its benefits available to all. The organization is guided by four core values: generosity, integrity, inclusiveness and excellence.
Assignment
Following the success of an initial project to create a graphic identity for The Black Philanthropy Initiative—an initiative of The Winston-Salem Foundation encouraging philanthropy among African-Americans in our community—the Foundation approached M Creative with an assignment to design their Annual Report. The annual report is a major communications piece used by the Foundation to inform current donors, prospects and the community-at-large of the activities of the Foundation including grants awarded in the past year and funds established through the generosity of donors.
Solution
M Creative recognized the opportunity to leverage the core values of the Foundation in an attempt to begin to tell the story of the unique contributions of the Foundation to the local community. Generosity was chosen in 2004 and 2005. Integrity was chosen for the 2007 report. Design and content have captured the flow and spirit of generosity and integrity. The Winston-Salem Foundation received a Council on Foundations Gold Award in the Annual or Biennial Reports category in the 2006 Wilmer Shields Rich Awards Program for Excellence in Communications for the 2004 Annual Report, 'A Generous Community.' The 2007 report was recognized nationally with a bronze in 2007 Wilmer Shields Rich Awards category of Community Foundations.
